They lapsed into silence, and he watched her from the corner of his eye. She truly was a beautiful woman. Why he would notice her was beyond him. When the plane fired up and the engines roared, her hands clamped down on the arm rests at her sides.

"First time flying?" He watched her knuckles turn white.

"No, I just always panic until it’s off the ground." The plane pulled up, taking flight. "Sorry, but I’ll be okay in a minute."

"Relax," He let his hand rest over hers. "It will level out soon."

She did, in fact, relax, and she smiled her thanks when he squeezed her hand. For a good hour she sat quietly, but he was compelled to draw her into conversation.

She still hadn’t turned to face him, and he wondered what face went with the low alto voice that had shivers racing along his body.

"I’m Patrick."

"Christine."

"What do you do that brings you to the islands?"

"I am an author, and I have a book signing scheduled. How about you?"

"I work for a law firm and was asked to speak at the conference." He looked at her and saw the interest in her eyes. "Maybe we could get together for dinner?"

Why had he asked that? Not only was she not his type, he was supposed to be getting married.

Christine sized him up for a minute. His brown hair and eyes set off his classic features, and he had to be the sexiest man she had ever set her eyes on. Why not? It wasn’t like this happened to her every day.

"That would be nice." She smiled brightly but then gasped when the plane pitched. "What the hell was that?"

"Just a bump in the road."

"Excuse me? We are thousands of feet in the air. I wasn’t aware we would meet pot holes along the way."

He chuckled at her look, but was beginning to worry himself. If this was natural turbulence, it was the worst he had ever encountered. When the oxygen masks dropped, so did his gut.

"Ladies and gentleman, this is the captain speaking. Please adjust your seat belts and place the masks over your faces." A voice sounded over the speaker. "The plane seems to be having some difficulty, and we are turning around. Please remain calm as the situation is handled."

"Remain calm?" Christine all but shouted. "How in the hell are we supposed to do that?"

"I’m sure it’s nothing." The plane dipped. "Talk to me. Maybe it will help."

"I don’t want to talk. I want to get my feet on land."

"Christine," He tried to soothe her, but the plane bucked and dipped. He had the sensation of falling. He took her hand.

"Assume crash positions." A voice shouted through the tiny plane, and they could hear the captain yelling his distress call. "We are going down. Last known coordinates."

His voice trailed off, and Patrick leaned over Christine, looking out the side window. Nothing but sea. They were going to crash into the sea.

"Oh. My. God." She panted and placed her head between her knees. "I never thought I would go like this."

"I could think of better ways to go myself." He tucked his body and placed an arm around her shoulder.

When her tear-filled, frightened eyes met his, he couldn’t stop himself. Patrick leaned over and placed his lips to hers. The impact of the plane hitting the water was jarring, and Christine’s head smacked the window, her eyes closing as she lost consciousness. Patrick closed his eyes and waited for death.
