  Excerpt

Coming Nicholas Paxton looked around himself, wondering how he had come to this place. Wondering just where this place was. He knew he was dead. Had been shot and dumped in the ocean to die. Now he seemed to be drifting, floating through a cloudy haze. Was he moving toward heaven, or would this be his hell?

No, something was keeping him here. He could feel something inside, a feeling that he would be able to make a wrong right. But that confused him. He was a ghost, right? Did ghost's have feelings?

There were other's like him. He could see them as they drifted. Did they feel as lost as he? Did they to feel as if they were missing something, and needed to find it, fix it? He let out a sigh, not sure anymore what he was feeling or why. He was dead, and dead men went one of two way's. Either way, he wished he could get there and rest in peace.

Still, anger flowed through him. It was so unfair. He had finally reached the point in his life that he had always dreamed. His law firm was one of the best in, California. He had more money than he had ever planned. A beautiful house, flashy car's, and was chosen San Jose's most wanted bachelor. Life was good and he had been happy.

In one single moment, all of that changed. A thug in his office, a gun, a burning pain in his chest as the bullet ripped through his flesh. The sensation of floating as he was dumped into the sea. He only wished he knew why this man had done this to him.

Nicholas shivered at the thought of his body still drifting in the tides. Was he a meal for the little scavengers on the ocean floor? Was he now in the belly of the larger predator's of the sea? In all his year's, he had made a few enemies.

But not one of them, or anyone for that matter, deserved to die such a way.

He had only been in his late twenties, and accomplished so much. He was never a selfish man. Always tried to give if it was needed. What had he ever done to deserve this? Why in the hell didn't he just move on?

There was a reason for everything, he believed in this. Something was holding him here, all he needed to do was find what was holding him and why. How he would do that, he didn't know, but he felt sure it would come to him. All he needed to do was believe he had one last mission to complete. Isn't it said that a ghost will move on after the take care of unfinished business?

The only business he would like to finish is getting his hands on his killer. He may have to die, but Nicholas would take one more with him.  If he was given the chance to.

As he sat pondering the how's and why's of his situation, he didn't notice the small flame beside him that was steadily growing. Once he did however, he lost his breath for a moment. It wasn't something he expected to see in this place, but then again, what did he really expect? He watched until it burned bright before his eyes.

Through the flame he could clearly see a woman. A woman he knew and knew well. She had been his secretary once. Before his life had ended. She looked diffrent, though the change seemed subtle. Older, she looked older.

That couldn't be right. The Sarah Winter's he knew would have defied the odd's with plastic surgery before she would allow such a thing. But it was there, before his eyes, and she had changed.

How much time I truly passed? It seemed to him like yesterday, but how could he know just how much time had gone by?

He watched Sarah through the flame, and wondered why he was seeing this now. Was this a punishment of some kind? He rejected her at every turn once. Sure, they had a swift affair, but it was never anything he had wanted to take further than what it was. It was all about sex. Was this fate showing him what he will never have again? Not Sarah herself, but a woman?

Nicholas narrowed his eyes and a suspicion formed when his partner in the law firm came into view. Will Bradley had been his friend in law school and they had built Paxton & Bradley together from the ground up. Together, they had made it big. But watching Will pull Sarah into his arm's set off warning bells. Not for the fact that Will and his ex lover were involved. That didn't bother him at all. It was for reason's only he could understand.

Will had never trusted Sarah. Nicholas couldn't remember a single conversation that didn't end with Will telling him the woman was a money hungry man eater. The man had all but acted hostile whenever she was in the same room with them. But looking at them now, you would think they were dedicated lovers.

Nicholas turned away when Will bent Sarah over her desk. Some things were best left alone, and that was not the image he wanted in his mind. But it did make him think. Will himself looked older. His hair now held gray at his temples. How long had he been here? Why was he here?

When he looked back at the flame, he not only seen the two, but he could hear them as well. Having no idea how he knew it would work, Nicholas waved his hand over the flame and it went out.

He was still hanging around for a reason, and if one flame had come to him, then another would in time. He would wait, figure it all out. After all, where the hell would he go?
